Sarnia Library To Remain Closed Until Further Notice
Friday, July 21, 2017

Sarnia, ON - The County of Lambton and the City of Sarnia are advising the public that the Sarnia Library will remain closed until further notice following a minor fire in the basement of the downtown facility that occurred last week. Effective July 25 bookmobile services will also be temporarily suspended due to limited access to the Sarnia Library facility.

"While the fire itself was minor, it has unfortunately caused considerable damage to the building including the destruction of an electrical transformer," said Vince Wijsman, Property Manager, City of Sarnia. "Additionally, the HVAC system distributed smoke throughout the entire facility resulting in significant smoke remediation work."

Contractors have been on site daily cleaning the materials, equipment and furnishings; however, there remains substantial cleaning work related to the ventilation system in anticipation of reopening, to ensure the health and safety of staff and patrons. Staff were recently informed by the contractors involved that the duration of the remediation work will take approximately four weeks.

Power was restored to the facility on July 20; residents are advised that the phone systems are not operational while the facility is closed to the public.

The Library is cancelling or rescheduling some of its summer events due to the indefinite closure of the facility.

The following events, previously scheduled for July 22, will now be postponed until Saturday, October 28 to coincide with Zombie Fest:

  • HadouCon, a multimedia convention
  • Tours in the Makerspace

Relocated events include:

  • Canada's 150th Birthday Show with the Polka Dot Door (July 24) - NOW at Bright's Grove Library

Cancelled events include:

  • Movie: "Pete's Dragon" (July 24)
  • Adult Mystery Book Club (July 24)
  • Learn to Embroider (July 25)

All Makerspace tours and workshops and children's programs are also cancelled until further notice. Information regarding programs previously scheduled for the month of August will be posted to the library website at www.lclibrary.ca.
