AQUATICS

2018-SS-001 – Lifeguard (25 positions)

Spend your summer having fun in the sun while keeping our residents safe!

Our Aquatics staff is responsible for maintaining a safe environment at City of Sarnia pools and beaches by providing necessary supervision and protection for swimmers and onlookers, in accordance with recognized lifeguard procedures. Our lifeguards require attention to detail and poise in chaotic situations. Aquatics staff are required to be available to work a variety of scheduled shifts, including evenings and weekends. We require candidates to hold current and valid NLS (National Lifeguard Service), Standard First Aid and CPR certification.

Pool Lifeguards are additionally responsible for teaching quality swim lessons including instruction, knowledge and coaching to participants. All Pool Lifeguards and our Pool Manager must possess a Red Cross/RLSS Instructor’s certificate.

Pool Managers are accountable for the scheduling and management of all Pool Lifeguards. You must have strong verbal and leadership skills and experience in an aquatic setting.

Our Beach Head Guards are responsible for the management of all Beach Lifeguards. NLS Waterfront certification is considered an asset for lifeguarding at our beaches.


DAY CAMPS

2018-SS-004 – Parks Program Leader (4 positions)

2018-SS-007 – Camp/Park Program Supervisor (1 position)

Be a positive role model and help the kids in our community have a memorable summer!

Day Camp staff  are enthusiastic, energetic, motivated, and responsible and have a love for children. You will work together with the rest of the day camp team and participate in the planning and organization of the summer programming including games, crafts, outdoor education, field trips and special guests. You are accountable for the day-to-day supervision and safety of the children. As front line staff, you must be able to problem solve and work effectively with your team members and parents. All day camp staff must hold current First Aid and CPR C certifications and have experience working with children.

As a Leader, you will run a stimulating, fast-paced leisure program for children ages 3 to 5 or 6 to 10 at Newton Park, Wildwood Park or Camp Saredaca during July and August.

The Camp Team Lead is responsible for leading the team of Camp Program Leaders with their summer program at Camp Saredaca. Experience working with children in a leadership role is considered an asset.

As the Camp/Park Program Supervisor, you will oversee our day camp programs and staff which includes scheduling, training, and supervision to ensure the camp and park programs operate in an efficient manner. You must hold a valid G class driver's licence with an acceptable abstract as per City guidelines. Experience working with children in a leadership role is considered an asset.


ENGINEERING

2018-SS-008 - G.I.S. Technician
(1 position)

This position will be using the latest ESRI ArcMap to:

1. Update and maintain existing and new data sets:

• Base Data – eg. Parcel/Building land use layer
• Infrastructure data – water/sewer/roads
• Importing and projecting GPS data currently being collected
• Updating new subdivision development and capital project asbuilt’s data
• Capturing data from 10cm Ortho photography

2. Provide GIS related data and presentation mapping to various departments (Engineering/Public Works/Planning/Parks)

Applicants must have completed one year of College or University in a GIS related program, and hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines.

2018-SS-009 - Engineering Analyst for Asset Management
(1 position)

This position will assist the Engineering Department's Municipal Engineering Specialist with the compilation and analysis of data required for the development of the City of Sarnia’s Corporate Asset Management Plan. Applicants must currently be pursuing a University Degree in Engineering (second or third year completion preferred).

2018-SS-023 - Development & Transportation Technologist
(1 position)

This position will be assisting in the Development and Transportation Division of the Engineering Department, completing field work related to subdivision development, site plans and City right of ways.

Completion of first year college in a Civil or Transportation Engineering Technology program is required and applicants must hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines.

2018-SS-024 - Labourer - Environmental 
(2 positions)

The City is launching a water sampling program to be conducted from private properties and requires students to develop and distribute public education material, co-ordinate and conduct the water sampling, and log, input and analyze the data in City’s GIS.

Applicants must currently be pursuing a science or engineering based program at a college or university and must hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines

ADMINISTRATIVE

For our administrative roles, candidates must have completed one year of an Office Administration College program. Excellent demonstrated public relations and customer service skills are essential as you work closely with the citizens of Sarnia.

2018-SS-010 - Public Works Clerk
(1 position)

As the Public Works Clerk, you will assist with administrative duties for our Public Works Department located at 651 Devine Street. You will answer the phone and provide service at the counter, process accounts payable and receivables, as well as word processing and data entry.

You must also hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines.

2018-SS-011 - Customer Service Representative/Finance Student
(1 position)

You will work as part of the Customer Service team at City Hall and be responsible for administrative tasks, including working with the public to answer inquiries, accepting and processing payments, balancing daily cash receipts, processing revenue and invoices, and other duties as assigned. This position will also work on projects that support improved efficiency within the organization.


PARKS MAINTENANCE

2018-SS-012 - Parks Maintenance (Parks, Sports fields, Horticulture, Forestry)
(31 positions)

Did you know that the City of Sarnia owns and manages 110 parks? Would you love to work outside this summer while caring for our parks, gardens, trees, sports fields and public spaces?

Parks maintenance summer students work hard in extreme summer heat and bring an exceptional level of service to our City's green spaces while interacting positively with the public. You are safety conscious and always demonstrate safe work practices, follow instructions well, possess excellent teamwork skills and have the ability to communicate effectively in a professional manner.

You will work as part of a team and will perform a variety of general maintenance and clean-up duties to ensure our parks and public spaces are enjoyed by citizens and visitors alike.

Working conditions include physical labour with moderate to heavy lifting, the use of small tools, lawn maintenance equipment and requires mental alertness to ensure the safety of yourself and others. Candidates must hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines. 


LABOURERS

2018-SS-013 - Public Works/Pump Stations/Harbour
(12 positions)

As a Student Labourer, you get to spend your summer outside being part of a team that actively assists operational staff in maintaining a multitude of services throughout the City, while interacting positively with the public.

Public Works maintains the water, sewer and road systems as well as operates two sewage facilities within the City. Public Works also oversees the contracts for garbage collection and recycling, and maintains the City's fleet.

Our Public Works Department maintains:
• 585 kilometers of roadway   • 330 kilometers of sidewalks   • 31 Bridges and Culverts   • 2717 Fire Hydrants   • 500 kilometers of Water Mains   • 350 kilometers of Sanitary Sewers   • 320 kilometers of Storm Sewers

The Sarnia Harbour is compromised of the Government Dock, East Dock, North Slip, Sidney Smith Wharf, Mission Park berthage and related lands, buildings and facilities. 

Our labourers are responsible for general maintenance, clean up, landscaping, grass cutting, painting, etc. You are safety conscious and always demonstrate safe work practices, follow instructions well, possess excellent teamwork skills and have the ability to communicate effectively in a professional manner.

Working conditions include physical labour with moderate to heavy lifting, the use of small tools, lawn maintenance equipment and requires mental alertness to ensure the safety of yourself and others. Candidates must hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines. 


PROPERTY MAINTENANCE

2018-SS-014
(1 position)

This position is responsible for assisting the Maintenance Technicians with the maintenance and repair of City properties, buildings and equipment. This includes indoor maintenance work such as painting, carpentry, repairs, and general custodian cleaning, as well as outside grounds maintenance.

Candidates must possess a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines.


BY-LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

2018-SS-015
(2 positions)

As a By-Law Enforcement Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with parking and traffic by-laws. You will conduct routine foot patrols and site inspections throughout the City (focusing on the downtown core) to ensure compliance with municipal by-laws.

To be considered, you must be enrolled in Police Foundations or a Law Enforcement College or University program and hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines.


STUDENT PLANNER

2018-SS-016
(1 position)

As our Student Planner, you will support our Planning division and work closely with staff to assist with day-to-day tasks and long-range planning projects. You will undertake research, particularly gathering information to update the City’s Built Cultural Heritage and Commercial land inventories.

Applicants must have completed one year of College or University in an Urban and Regional Planning program, or equivalent program of study, and hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines. Previous GIS, research and data management experience is an asset.


ARCHIVAL ASSISTANT

2018-SS-017
(1 position)

As the Archival Assistant, you will assist our records management staff in implementing best archival practices for inactive documents. You will also assist with the 2018 Municipal Election planning.


STRANGWAY PROGRAM ASSISTANT

2018-SS-018
(1 position)

The Strangway Centre is a City of Sarnia recreation facility that offers a variety of programming for adults ages 20+ such as recreation/fitness programs, adult wellness, arts & culture, special interest courses & seminars, an in house café and a wood working shop.

Our Strangway Program Assistant is responsible for assisting in the summer programming and general administrative assistance at the Strangway Centre and with the Recreation Department.

The ability to multi-task, deal effectively and courteously with the general public, all levels of staff, and community groups is needed to be successful in this position. Applicants must be willing to work evenings and weekends. Education or work experience in program or event planning, leadership and communication will be considered an asset.


SUMMER EVENTS ASSOCIATE

2018-SS-019
(1 position)

Our Summer Events Associate is responsible for assisting in the planning, coordination, supervision, development and promotion of the Sarnia Summer Events Program.

The ability to multi-task, deal effectively and courteously with the general public, all levels of staff, and community groups is necessary to be successful in this position.

Education or work experience in events management, sport and recreation, program planning, leadership, communication, and marketing will be considered an asset. Applicants must be willing to work evenings and weekends, and must hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines.


SUMMER EVENTS AND PARKS ASSISTANT

2018-SS-020
(1 position)

This position will support the implementation of assigned Sarnia Summer Event Programs, ensuring a safe, accessible and clean program site. You will be responsible for the on-site supervision of the Summer Entertainment Series, liaising with community musicians and bands, providing excellent customer service to concert attendees, collecting and completing evening evaluations, and handling donations.  Other duties will include the cleaning and general maintenance of the Canatara Park Bandshell and Suncor Agora, as well as other assigned park duties.

Candidates must be able to work independently while being a part of a team and must submit reports, evaluations, and attend meetings as required.  Applicants must be willing to work evenings and weekends, have the ability to move heavy equipment, and hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines.


LAWRENCE HOUSE ASSISTANT ART INSTRUCTOR

2018-SS-021
(1 position)

This position will assist the Art Camp Instructor in a variety of weekly themed art activities, as well as games, activities and outdoor play for an 8-week program. Experience working with children ages 6-10 years old is considered an asset, as well as education and interest in the art field.


TRAIN OPERATOR

2018-SS-022
(2 positions)

The Canatara Choo Choo train is an attraction enjoyed by families all summer long. Our train operators are responsible for the safe operation of the train through a pre-determined pathway within Canatara Park.

The Train Operator will also provide administrative duties of taking payments and reconciling daily tickets and cash receivables. Candidates must hold a valid G class driver's licence with an abstract acceptable to City guidelines.
