CHIEFS MESSAGE

On behalf of the dedicated members of Sarnia Fire Rescue Services, I welcome you to our website.

The Sarnia Fire Rescue Services consists of 131 professionals who serve the residents of the City of Sarnia by providing Fire Prevention, Public Education and Fire Suppression Services.

We operate out of five stations covering an area of 65 square miles (168 square kilometres) and over 72,000 residents.  The services we provide range from fire suppression and prevention, land-based water rescue, high-angle, confined space, specialized vehicle extrication and industrial firefighting.

The Sarnia Fire Rescue Services provides services to the Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport, the CN Tunnel under the St. Clair River, along with the CN marshaling yards, Highway 402 and the Sarnia Harbour which is winter home to as many as eight Great Lakes Freighters that undergo winter repairs.

The CVECO (Chemical Valley Emergency Coordinating Organization) is a unique mutual aid partnership of municipalities and industrial fire brigades. This organization was formed to provide assistance to the refineries and chemical plants in both Sarnia and St. Clair Township.  40% of Canada’s refineries are located within the two communities and this unique partnership allows both the municipalities and industry to use the extensive resources to successfully mitigate any emergency that may occur.

The City of Sarnia and the City of Port Huron, Michigan have a Mutual Aid agreement and work together to protect the rail tunnel and provide assistance to each community in the advent of a municipal emergency. The Sarnia Fire Rescue Services is also a member of the Lambton County Mutual Aid Plan.

Sarnia Fire Rescue Services approaches our role in the community by three lines of Defense:

PUBLIC EDUCATION AND PREVENTION

We believe that it is our duty to educate residents on means for them to fulfill their responsibilities for their own fire safety.  (This is the best way to reduce the incidence of fire. Residents must be educated to take responsibility for their own fire safety.)

FIRE SAFETY STANDARDS AND ENFORCEMENT

Ensure that buildings have the required fire protection systems, safety features, etc., so that fire damage and causalities will be reduced.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE (SUPPRESSION)

The community’s ‘Failsafe’ for those times when fire does occur…

I am very proud of the personnel that deliver these services in a professional and dedicated manner.  Thank you for taking the time to visit our site.

Yours in Fire Safety

P.M. (Pat) CayenFire Chief Sarnia Fire Rescue Services
