The City of Sarnia, through the provisions of the Sarnia-Lambton Act, is part of the restructured County of Lambton. The County of Lambton is considered to be the "upper-tier" level of local government while the “lower-tier” level is comprised of eleven local municipalities including the City of Sarnia.
The City of Sarnia is responsible for areas such as tax collection, recreation (arenas, parks, etc.), land use planning for the City, fire protection, policing, garbage and recycling collection, water and sewers among others.
Lambton County is responsible for Provincial Offences Court administration, land use planning for the municipalities except for the City of Sarnia, long-term care facilities, community health protection, social services, housing services, landfills, libraries and museums among others. Services such as the care and maintenance of roads are shared.
Effective September, 2004 the County of Lambton passed a by-law to prohibit smoking in all indoor public and work places. This upper tier by-law applies to all of the municipalities within the County including the City of Sarnia.
The senior levels of government include the Province of Ontario (Provincial Government), whose local representative is known as the Member of Provincial Parliament or M.P.P., and the Government of Canada (Federal Government), whose local representative is known as the Member of Parliament or M.P.
