Agriculture and the Countryside

Agriculture and the Countryside

Over 50% of the area of the City is rural. Predominated by crop and livestock production, agriculture is of fundamental importance to the City and County. Annual gate receipts alone are valued at over $15 million dollars.

Rural Sarnia is a dynamic area that is home to a number of distinguishable landscapes that function together as a prime agricultural area. Prime agricultural land, wetlands, woodlots and watercourses provide benefits that extend beyond property boundaries and form a valuable part of the rural environment.  Ensuring a balance that support productive agricultural lands and operations while maintaining and enhancing natural features is in everyone’s best interest.

Strong provincial agricultural policies recognize that farm fragmentation and lot creation often result in land use conflicts that undermine the long-term flexibility and viability of agricultural operations and prime agricultural areas. Rural communities and their institutions form a vibrant and vital part of the City. Supporting a strong, adaptable agricultural industry is crucial to the foundations of a robust rural economy.

The Countryside is facing many opportunities and challenges. Urban encroachment, shifts in agriculture and the recognition of the importance that natural areas and ecosystems play in our health and well-being require a renewed look and understanding of the rural areas of our City.
