At its regular meeting held on Monday, January 20, 2020, Sarnia City Council:

  • Assembled as Committee of the Whole to discuss amendments to the Code of Conduct.
  • Directed staff to proceed with the full scope of the Oversize Load Corridor Project based on the revised total project estimate of $16,950,000 and full original City of Sarnia contribution of $4,700,000.
  • Opted to include only Donohue Bridge replacement costs in the Petro-Chemical Special Area Levy calculations.
  • Authorized an Agreement with Ferry Dock Hill Management Inc. (Minutes of Settlement) related to the termination of the lease at 2 Ferry Dock Hill.
  • Accepted the tender submitted by CRS Tunneling Inc. in the amount of $19,354,360.01 including non-rebateable HST, for construction required for sewer main as part of the Sarnia Sewer Upgrade Project.
  • Approved Short-Term Borrowing, Interim Tax Levy, and Pre-Authorized Payment By-Laws.
  • Repealed the Financial Policy Statement as it has been replaced by a number of newly adopted financial policies.
  • Approved the implementation of Community Safety Zones around the four Active and Safe Routes to School Program Schools (P.E. McGibbon, Errol Road, Rosedale, and St. Michael), and directed staff to report back on a Vision Zero framework for the City of Sarnia.
  • Directed staff to investigate updating development related by-laws in order to prevent hindrances for developers wishing to develop lands in the City.
  • Directed staff to prepare a report regarding Kitchen Tap Filters for residents in the Lead Zone.
  • Directed staff to publicly distribute information regarding Market Value Assessments and the appeals process.
  • Directed staff to report back at the next regular meeting regarding the Arena Wifi proposal.
  • Approved a request for support for the halting of the construction of the Deep Geological Repository in the Bruce Peninsular.
  • Amended the Procedure By-law to open meetings with the Traditional Territory Acknowledgement following the National Anthem.
  • Directed staff to continue to procure diesel buses, rather than electric or hybrid options.
  • Approved an agreement with Kiwanis Club of the Seaway for the replication of the Log Cabin in Canatara Park.
  • Received information regarding a joint partnership involving the Sarnia Kinsmen Club and the Baxter Park Neighborhood Group which has been established to discuss potential improvements to Baxter Park.
  • Received information regarding the submission of an Expression of Interest to purchase the former Sarnia Collegiate Institute & Technical School. The Expression of Interest allows the City to be kept apprised as to developments relative to its eventual disposition and does not commit the City to purchasing the property.
  • The next Committee of the Whole (Corporate Priorities/Strategic Planning Meeting) will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 27, 2020.
  • The next Regular Council Meeting will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, February 10, 2020.
