The City of Sarnia and the Village of Point Edward declared a state of emergency on March 18, 2020, in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, and have taken a disciplined, responsible and measured approach to implement precautionary measures to protect citizens from this virus. That same approach is guiding decision-making about reopening facilities in the weeks and months ahead.

In March, The City of Sarnia and Village of Point Edward closed municipal parking lots associated with beaches and under the Bluewater Bridge, to discourage visitors from accessing the area during the pandemic, reinforcing the intent of the provincial orders and supporting policing and By-Law enforcement efforts tasked with enforcing the orders.

The Sarnia Primary Control Group together with the Village of Point Edward will be permitting, effective Friday, June 12, 2020 at 12:00 p.m., parking lot access for use in these municipal lots.

Canatara Park (Sarnia)

The beach washrooms located near the Beach Pavilion and Band Shell will be reopened for the season this Friday June 12, 2020 at noon. These washrooms will be open for use from 8:30am – 3:30pm daily.

The washrooms near the animal farm have been open throughout the Covid-19 State of Emergency and are open for use from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. daily.

Reconstruction work at the west entrance to Canatara Park, including the west roundabout near Sandy Lane continues, and there is no vehicle access to Canatara Park from Sandy Lane. Access to Canatara Park remains open at the Christina Street entrance.

Road work is expected to take four weeks and began June 1, 2020. Road closure signs are posted.

Centennial Park (Sarnia)

The Agora washrooms remain open for use from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. daily.

Under the Bluewater Bridge (Point Edward)

Due to ongoing, scheduled renovations to the washrooms found in the parking lot, they will not be available until later next week. Portable Toilets have been made available at this same location.

The washrooms at the Splash Pad will remain closed at this time.

The washrooms located in front of the Lambton Area Water Supply System will remain closed at this time.

All other park washrooms will remain closed throughout the communities.

Knowing that these areas can attract large numbers, visitors should keep this in mind when choosing to visit. Citizens are reminded to keep at least two metres apart from each other during this time. In addition to physical distancing, you should stay home if displaying symptoms of Covid-19, ensure frequent washing and sanitation of hands, and be extra patient and aware of your environment.

Park amenities, including playgrounds, outdoor exercise equipment, splash pads and swimming pools remain closed to the public at this time.

In light of the easing of these restrictions, we remind residents that all safety measures aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19 should not be eased.
