Frequently Asked Questions

1. I would like my boulevard tree to be pruned. Who do I call?
The City’s Forestry Department maintains all of Sarnia’s boulevard trees. Please call 519-332-0330 extension 3209 to have your request placed in sequence for routine pruning.

2. I would like a tree planted on the boulevard in front of my house. Who do I call?
Tree planting happens in early Spring and late Fall. Please call our office and asked to be put on our list. The selection of the tree will be made by the City Arborist, and will take into consideration the location of the boulevard and other environmental factors. Locates will then be conducted, so as to ensure that no hydro, gas or cable lines will be affected by the new tree. A tree will then be planted, and you will receive instructions regarding the care of your new tree.

The following is list of criteria used when selecting location and tree species:

  • Underground and above ground wires/cables

  • Wet or dry site

  • Sun/shade

  • Flowering or shade tree

  • Tree’s susceptibility to disease or insects

  • Sensitivity to salt

 3. Does the city have a memorial tree program?
The City of Sarnia does have a Commemorative Tree Planting Program. Various species of trees are available, and planting will be done April through June, and in November. Please call 519-332-0330 extension 3209 for more information.

4. I think my boulevard tree may have a disease. What do I do?
Please call our office at City Hall and let us know. Our City Arborist will inspect the tree, and plan for removal, if necessary.   If you have any other questions about a tree that is located on city property, please call us at 519-332-0330 extension 3209, and we will be happy to help.

5. A tree in my yard is dead or needs to be trimmed. What do I do?
The city's forestry crew does not trim or remove trees that are on private property. Our suggestion would be to call some local companies that offer removal or trimming services for quotes. Shop around for the best price, and choose the company or service that you are the most comfortable with.

6. What do you do with the trees after you take them down?
All brush is chipped and re-cycled into mulch for boulevard and park trees, as well as used under play equipment in some city parks.

7. How much will it cost me for the City to plant a tree on my property?
Trees are planted at no cost to you. Our Standard tree is bare root and measures 40 mm in diameter and approximately 2.5 metres in height. Our arborist will choose the best possible tree species suitable for your location.  If you wish to plant a larger tree in front of your home, there is a cost involved. Please call Parks and Recreation for an estimate.
