Building upon the parks existing features and feedback from residents and interest holders, the Kenwick Park Improvement Plan is part of a long-term vision to improve accessibility while accommodating a variety of uses, allowing people to enjoy the lake, park, sports amenities, weekly market, and community events.
Recommended projects are all subject to resource allocation and approval by City Council during the annual budget process.
Plan Highlights
The proposed plan outlines approximately $985,000 in improvements to the park.
Boardwalk and Pathway Loop
Proposed boardwalk and pathway loop improvements include:
- Incorporation of existing memorial benches and new opportunities for strolling, pausing, gathering, and connecting to the park’s interior
- Access driveway for food trucks to enter the park
Heritage Dance Floor, Event / Market Space
Proposed improvements:
- Use of existing pad on Old Lakeshore Road as a multipurpose space
- Overhead string lights to define and engage the space and support events
- Utility servicing for the market operations, food trucks and events
Gazebo
Proposed gazebo improvements include:
- Relocation of the existing gazebo to a more prominent location to function to better accommodate smaller events and functionality as a stage
- Formal garden backdrop frames
Adventure Playground
Proposed improvements to the playground include:
- Accessible opportunities that support a wider age of users
- Additional swings
Sports Courts
Proposed improvements:
- New regulation size Basketball Court
- Paved connections to the pathway loop to improve access to sports courts
Landscape
Proposed landscaping improvements include:
- Additional tree planting throughout the park
- Planting of shoreline dune species along the boardwalk
- Seasonal planting in gardens near the gazebo
- Pollinator Garden
Parking
Proposed parking improvements:
- Organized parking areas with concrete barriers defining limits
- Four accessible spaces connected to the paved pathway loop
- Bicycle rack parking near high use areas
Heritage Preservation
Proposed heritage preservation items:
- Existing Heritage Park signs will be retained in their existing locations
- Current rustic and causal asthetic of the park will be considered for all interventions
Additional Features
Additional features of the Kenwick Park Improvement Plan include:
- Concreate pads with benches and accessible space for wheelchairs along the pathway loop
- Garbage and recycling containers in high use locations
- Light posts to be arranged along the boardwalk
