March 27, 2025 — The City of Sarnia is expanding the ways residents can engage in celebrating Earth Day this year, with the addition of a Tree Giveaway alongside the long-standing Community Clean-Up Day.

Both events will take place April 26, on the Saturday after Earth Day.

Tree Giveaway

Brought to residents by City Council the Sarnia Environmental Advisory Committee, the pilot event will see 400 trees provided free of charge to Sarnia residents. Twenty different species of trees are available, all of which are native to southern Ontario. Sarnia residents can visit Germain Park to collect their free tree starting at 9 a.m. Trees will be distributed from the southern gate to the forestry yard, to the east of the Strangway Centre and just west of the park’s Japanese Garden. All trees will be about one to two metres when distributed.

“Trees deliver a host of benefits to the community — from providing shade to helping prevent erosion — so we’re certainly excited to host the first such tree giveaway for the community, providing them the chance to enhance our urban canopy,” said Manager of Recreation and Parkland Planning Services, Krissy Glavin.

Trees must be planted on private property and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Community Clean-Up Day

As in years past the City is inviting the community to come out to clean up litter in public greenspaces with the annual Community Clean-Up Day.  Participants can register as an individual or group to come out and clean up litter not only in City parks, but also on trails, streets, and other green spaces. Registration is open until April 11 at noon. Participants can also register to obtain clean-up kits featuring bags, gloves, and other supplies donated by NOVA Chemicals.

Clean-up kits are available as supplies last. Participants who request clean-up kits will be able to collect them at the Strangway Centre from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 25.

The clean up will take place April 26, from 10 a.m. to noon, before a barbecue hosted by the Rotary Club of Sarnia-Lambton After-Hours at Germain Park following the clean-up. To learn more about the City’s Earth Day events, and to register for the Community Clean Up, visit www.sarnia.ca/EarthDay.
