UPDATE — As of 4 p.m. on February 13, 2025 the significant weather event has ended.
February 12, 2025 — Due to the forecasted weather conditions, the City of Sarnia has declared a significant weather event beginning at 3 p.m. on February 12, 2025.
A significant weather event is declared when it is anticipated that approaching or current weather hazards have the potential to pose significant danger to road users within the community.
This declaration is to notify the public that due to the anticipated weather conditions, extreme caution is to be exercised when travelling on City of Sarnia roads, and that it may take longer than usual to clear roads and bring them back to normal conditions.
Snow removal operations will be deployed in response to the forecasted weather. The City operates a fleet of 17 plows, five sidewalk plows, and four parking lot plows, in addition to utilizing the support of snow-removal contractors as needed.
Snow removal is prioritized on designated primary routes to ensure the delivery of transit and access for emergency services. Secondary roads are cleared after primary routes have been completed. Sidewalks not on priority maintenance routes are not maintained from Nov. 1 to April 30. For more information on snow removal processes visit www.sarnia.ca/SnowRemoval.
Residents are reminded that overnight parking on City streets is prohibited during winter months to facilitate snow removal. Residents are asked where possible to avoid the use of on-street parking during daytime hours as well to further aid the process.
Weather may also impact Sarnia Transit service delivery, leading to delays or detours.
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning, predicting up to 20 cm of snow Wednesday evening and into Thursday, with peak snowfall rates of 2 to 4 cm per hour in addition to the risk of freezing rain.
Residents are also reminded to be prepared for any possible emergency, including extreme weather events, by having a home emergency preparedness kit including enough food, water and prescription medication for at least 72 hours. When travelling it is advised to stock a vehicle emergency kit. For more information visit www.sarnia.ca/EmergencyPrep.
