August 16, 2024 — In an effort to improve efficiency, while offering residents enhanced options for disposing of diverse waste types, the City will initiate a seven-month pilot project starting in September to provide a centralized location for waste drop off on Saturdays.
The City’s St. Andrew Street Compost Site has traditionally operated from Monday to Saturday between April and December, accepting yard waste and brush meeting criteria set out by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks. As efforts get under way to develop a Waste Management Master Plan, the City will operate a pilot project where the Compost Site will close on Saturdays, with residents instead directed to the City’s current waste collection contractor’s Transco Waste and Recycling facility.
The change will provide residents greater options in terms of the types of waste that can be dropped off free of charge on Saturdays. In addition to the yard waste and brush accepted at the Compost Site, visitors to the Transco Facility will be able to also drop off:
- Large items
- Garbage
- Scrap metal
- E-waste
For a full list of acceptable items, and costing for materials not currently accepted curbside, visit www.transcorecycling.com. Hazardous materials are not accepted.
“We’re testing the waters as to how this functions as we look at ways to more efficiently deliver waste services while improving the options available to our residents,” said David Jackson, General Manager of Engineering and Operations.
Additionally, the pilot will extend the time frame during which residents can utilize free Saturday drop off of yard waste and brush, with the Transco Waste and Recycling Facility open on Saturdays throughout the winter months when the Compost Site is closed.
The Transco Waste and Recycling Facility is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is located at 387 McGregor Side Road South. Proof of residency will be required for Sarnia residents wishing to access free drop off of yard waste, brush, large items, garbage and e-waste. The purchase of items such as mulch and compost is not available at Transco Waste and Recycling.
