March 31, 2023 — As the City begins efforts to develop an Active Transportation Master Plan, input and insight is being sought from residents.

Efforts are underway to develop a plan that will help guide investments into infrastructure supporting active transportation such as cycling, walking, and other human-powered modes of travel. The plan will help the City ensure future investments into active transportation enhance existing infrastructure, reflect the needs of the community, and function as an interconnected network.

To ensure the plan reflects the current and future needs of the community, the public is being asked to provide insight on their experiences as it relates to active transportation via a short survey. The data gathered from the survey will inform the creation of a draft Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) for review by the community and City Council.

“We want Sarnia to be a leader in this sector with a future-ready transportation network, one that reflects all modes of transport, providing an interconnected system of travel that is safe and functional for residents,” said Manager of Development / Transportation Alister Brown, adding, “more residents are looking to active transportation as an environmentally-friendly and healthy travel option, and we want to make sure those needs are reflected in our future investments.”

The ATMP will build on the City’s existing Transportation Master Plan, with investments recommended by both plans subject to Council approval during the annual budget process. The City’s Climate Change Action plan identifies support for increased active transportation as one of its objectives.
