December 6, 2024 – The flag in front of City Hall is lowered to half-mast in recognition of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day is observed annually to honour the victims and survivors of gender-based violence and to promote action to end such violence. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the 35th anniversary of the murders of 14 women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989.
