June 26, 2025 — As the City continues to advance critical investments in road, water and sewer infrastructure, a portion of Michigan Avenue will be closed starting Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
Project outcomes
The roughly $4.4 million project, in partnership with Lambton County, will advance several key infrastructure priorities, notably the replacement of water, sewer and road infrastructure nearing the end of its life while expanding the City’s active transportation network and introducing traffic safety improvements.
Water and sewer replacement
The project includes replacement of watermain and sewer forcemain on Michigan Avenue from Colborne to Indian Road, reducing instances of breaks and ensuring continued delivery of clean drinking water to our residents.
Traffic safety
The project also includes implementation of a road diet on Michigan Avenue from Colborne to Indian Road, reducing the total lanes of travel to calm speeds while maintaining traffic flow. Specifically, the project will see the current four lane configuration updated to consist of two directional travel lanes for motorized vehicles, with a central turning lane, alongside omni-directional cycling lanes on each side of the road.
Traffic calming enhances both pedestrian and motorist safety. The introduction of a road diet on Colborne Road in 2018 has resulted in a 35 decrease to collisions in the area.
The project will also see the introduction of a protected intersection at Michigan and Colborne.
Active transportation improvements
The project will include the addition of omni-directional cycling lanes on each side of the corridor, extending cycling infrastructure already in place in the area.
dents are waiting to turn left into their homes they would block through traffic. Providing infrastructure that supports active transportation is a key priority identified within the City’s Official Plan and Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP). Installing dedicated cycling infrastructure improves safety for cyclists and reduces barriers to active transportation for residents that are not comfortable cycling in vehicle lanes.
The corridor is specifically identified for the addition of bike lanes as part of the ATMP proposed cycling network.
Traffic impacts
Starting July 2, Michigan Road will be closed to through traffic from Christina Street to Indian Road. North-south traffic will be permitted on Colborne Road at its intersection with Michigan.
The primary project area stretches along Michigan Road from just west of Colborne Road to Indian Road.
Project timeline
The project involves considerable underground and road work that will require an extended closure. Work is expected to take several months. We appreciate our residents’ patience as we work to renew infrastructure in the community.
