Sarnia’s urban forest covers approximately 2,726 hectares, or about 17 per cent of the city. Found in parks, along streets, and in natural areas, these trees are a key part of our community and require ongoing care and long-term planning.

Building on the City’s Climate Change Action Plan, the Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) was approved by Council in 2025. The plan sets a clear direction for how we manage, protect, and grow the urban forest using current data, best practices and long-term goals.

Our Approach

The UFMP outlines a bold vision to increase Sarnia’s urban tree canopy to 23 per cent in urban areas by 2050. A key part of this work is expanding and maintaining trees on City boulevards and in public spaces, so all residents can experience the many benefits trees provide.

UFMP Goals

The UFMP is guided by five key goals:

Understanding — Goal 1

Improve how we plan and manage the urban forest by:

  • Collecting and maintaining accurate urban forest data
  • Integrating urban forestry into asset management planning
  • Monitoring the condition and performance of the urban forest

Maintaining — Goal 2

Care for a healthy, safe, and functional urban forest by:

  • Strengthening core urban forestry programs and service delivery
  • Maintaining trees at appropriate service levels
  • Identifying and responding to risks, invasive species, and disease
  • Protecting and enhancing ecosystem health and function

Growing — Goal 3

Expand and enhance the urban forest by:

  • Increasing canopy cover and working toward more equitable tree distribution
  • Improving tree planting practices, young tree care, and long-term success
  • Building resilience through species diversity and better planning

Protecting — Goal 4

Protect trees across the city by:

  • Strengthening tree protection through development and construction
  • Expanding protection for trees on private property
  • Improving tree protection in City projects and public spaces

Engaging — Goal 5

Work with the community to support and care for the urban forest by:

  • Improving coordination across City departments and partners
  • Increasing public awareness and education
  • Supporting community involvement and stewardship
  • Advancing reconciliation with Indigenous communities
