July 28, 2026 — The City of Sarnia is reminding trail users of proper trail etiquette to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Whether walking, cycling, running, using an e-bike, or enjoying the trail with pets, everyone plays a role in keeping City trials welcoming and accessible.
The City maintains a network of trails that connect neighbourhoods, parks, waterfront spaces, and natural areas throughout the community including the Howard Watson Nature Trail; Midtown Trail; Canatara Park Trails; and the Centennial Waterfront Trail.
“Our trails are a great asset to the community that bring people together and encourage healthy and active lifestyles,” said Manager of Development and Transportation, Alister Brown, adding, “part of trail use is shared responsibility and respect so that everyone can stay safe and enjoy their time outside.”
The City is encouraging trail users to follow simple etiquette practices including:
- Keeping right when travelling, and passing with care on the left
- Traveling at a safe speed
- Yielding to pedestrians
- Passing with care, only on the left
- Using a bell, verbal or other auditory signal to pass
- Leashing pets and cleaning up after them
- Respecting natural surroundings and wildlife
- Staying on the trail
- Being aware of surroundings
- Using caution at all crossings
- Not littering and using proper receptacles for waste
E-bikes that meet the Province of Ontario’s definition of a power-assisted bike are permitted on City trails and paths; riders should travel at a safe speed, yield appropriately, and pass with care while following all the trail etiquette practices listed above.
